Berlin
Integrated secondary school
The new building ensemble consisting of a school and a new sports hall is linked to the residential neighbourhood of the Cecilienviertel in Marzahn-Hellersdorf through differentiated open spaces and paths. A high degree of public accessibility after school promotes integration and creates acceptance. The multi-purpose room, canteen/cafeteria, library and music rooms are located at ground level with their own access and, like the sports hall, are also used outside of school. The school garden is also open to the neighbourhood.
The school building and sports hall are embedded as clear structures in the grown open space with old trees and follow the principle of a communicative landscape, which corresponds to the educational model of the compartment school. The individual parts, whether considered large-scale or small-scale, create communication and gradual transitions between activity and retreat, public and sheltered, sport and recreation, to link neighbourhoods and communities of different sizes.
The open space and the building structures are organised around the central action ribbon that runs from west to east in the middle of the site. It creates identity and orientation, connects the school and the sports hall as well as all outdoor uses. It structures the access, break and sports areas as well as the generous lawns with shady trees. A green fringe along the site boundary forms a threshold space of about five metres between the school and the street space, which frames the communicative landscape.
