Thézan-des-Corbières
Artist’s studio
An open volume serving as a studio and an exhibition space formed by two offset cubes that, to the north give onto large fixed glazed openings (3 x 3 m) and, to the south, an outdoor patio.
By interpreting the poetry of light, the space becomes a constantly changing variable that fragments and reveals itself through contextual inputs. The composition seems to disappear, replaced by a container, a monolith sculpted out from the inside and digesting the various light sources by transforming them into solids and voids, blacks and whites.
Apart from the architectural project itself, we also had to choose the right contractor. In the end it was a sheltered workshop centre that was chosen through the ELAN association. A sheltered workshop is a centre that employs mentally disabled adults and aims to encourage their social insertion and professional development. Its task is to individually guide these persons through training courses while ensuring they are provided with the necessary protection.
Although this choice led to certain delays in the work, the innovative skills and dedication of the workers were often much greater than we could have possibly imagined. Besides the works process itself, we were obviously proud to have shared this experience with them.
